Gentry went on The Ellen Program in March 2021 and said that her parents were overjoyed with her accomplishment on the Netflix show Ginny & Georgia. They asked her “who of [her] parents was white” and made remarks about how they wanted to have mixed-race children but didn’t want to deal with the hair. She also said that one of the characters, Brody, informed her that she looked better with her hair straight. The aspiring actor said that she had received some remarks in person as well. She went on to say that her classmates said it without “realizing how terrible such words were.”

Apart from the parallels between Gentry and Ginny, there are significant distinctions between her and her role, which she revealed to Teen Vogue in February 2021. The ethnicity of her real-life and fictional mothers was one of the most evident disparities for her. Gentry said that she and her Jamaican American mother were extremely close and that she could confide in her. Her mother knew how to fix her hair and understood her whenever she felt a particular way about her identity.
Ginny’s mother, on the other hand, is an American.
